Welcome:

During M/T's boat racing he had one of the worst injury he ever received. He had a scheduled demonstration run of his drag boat at Lake Mead, Nevada, on November 6, 1960. He was doing about 50 MPH when he hit a low wave from a patrol boat and the boat kited into the air, M/T with it, hanging on to the steering wheel. The boat dropped, leaving him in the air. As he came down the boat hit another wave and came slamming up to meet M/T, crushing his first and third lumbar vertebrae. He was taken to a hospital in Boulder City, Nevada, where he was x-rayed and placed in a plaster cast from hips to toes. They had told him that he may never walk, but like always he proved them wrong.
