1962 Indy 500

  Mickey Thompson went to the Indy 500 for the first time in 1962. He brought with him 2 of the most unusually cars seen at Indy, a rear engine layout powered by an American made stock block engine.

  Mickey had one car qualify and it was driven by rookie driver Dan Gurney who qualified the #34 car at 147.880 mph this put him in the 7th starting position.

 Dan Gurney went out in the 92th lap with a rear end problem, his finish position was 20th.
