1976:
The
engine in this car was mounted behind the driver facing toward the
rear. The transmission was a Oldsmoble Toranado front wheel drive
automatic with the differential removed and a plate adapted to the
transmission so a drive shaft could go to the back of the car where
it connected into a M/T fabricated unit with gears to allow the drive
shaft to connect to an independent rear end with inboard disc brakes.
The engine in this car was one of his old Small Block Chevrolet
engines he had used in his Indy cars. The Block is a magnesium
casting which was cast in 1959 by GM and the heads are a VERY rare
set of 1960 Corvette Aluminum heads, the crank was by Reath
Crankshafts. The bore was a stock 3.875 inch 283 with a 3.48 inch
stroke which gave the engine a displacement of 328 cubic inches,
rather small for a race engine in 1977, but in the Parker 400 it was
the fastest car there not bad for that small of engine in 1977. |
